João Manuel Carvalho Estêvão completed his Civil Engineering graduation at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) in 1989. He finished his MSc and PhD at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1999 and 2012, respectively, focusing his expertise area upon the field of seismic engineering.

He teaches structural engineering at the University of Algarve (UAlg) since 1993 and is presently the professor in charge of those courses. During the years he has been teaching several other courses at this Institution and is currently the director of the civil engineering graduation course and of the post-graduation in Building's Rehabilitation. He is also a renowned researcher in the field of Structural Dynamics and Seismic Engineering, activity carried out alongside with his teaching career. Among other subjects, João Estêvão has been focused on the seismic hazard of the Portuguese territory, dynamic analysis of layered soils, dynamic analysis of both masonry and reinforced concrete buildings, seismic vulnerability and risk assessment and finally, on the application of the Eurocode 8 (EC-8) to buildings structural design.
