Rui Maio was born on May 12 of 1988 in Coimbra, Portugal. He spent his early years in Barrô (Águeda), a very small village where he lived until 1994, when he moved with his parents to Aveiro city. After studying arts during high school, he went to Coimbra where he studied Art & Design for a short while at the College of Education of Coimbra. 2008 was the year of his return to Aveiro, this time to attend the course of Civil Engineering at the University of Aveiro. During his graduation, he was involved in several academic, sporting and cultural activities, where stands out the scholarship that he earned to study in Florianopolis (Brazil) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in 2011. In the year of 2012 he went to the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) to learn earthquake engineering, which allowed him to start developing his MSc dissertation regarding the seismic vulnerability of old masonry building aggregates. On October 2013, he completed his MSc degree and he is starting his professional career as a researcher on the URBSIS project. Currently he was accepted as trainee for the EC at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, researching on the topic: "Training on the seismic fragility assessment of the European building stock". He is also collaborating in the Young Heritage Experts on the development and enhancement of this network. Finally, he is starting his PhD under a one-year scholarship conceived by the Board of Studies (BoS) of the Doctoral Programme Analysis and Mitigation of Risks in Infrastructures InfraRisk-, with the theme of thesis focusing on the "Cost Assessment of Retrofitting Actions for Vulnerability Assessment of Architectural Valued Buildings".
